Anchorman 2 Review: “It is AnchorMAN, Not Anchor-Mediocre Sequel!”

Sequels are hard. Sequels to beloved comedies are harder. Separate the movies by about a decade and it makes it near impossible to create a worthy follow-up.  Continue reading

The Obsessive Viewer Podcast – Ep 36 – Pickled Gallbladder: Inside Llewyn Davis, American Hustle and Mea Maxima Culpa

After forcing to take a week off, here’s the latest ep of The Obsessive Viewer Podcast! Unfortunately, this episode has some extreme audio issues! There’s a consistent chopping noise throughout the episode that I, unfortunately, couldn’t remove.

I decided to go ahead and post this because we took last week off and it didn’t feel right going two weeks in a row without a new episode. Plus, we had a really fun, laid back recording session. So I hope the audio problems aren’t too annoying. If they are, we’ll be back next week with a quality ep.

This week we’re releasing a very special episode of The Obsessive Viewer Podcast! Not only is this the first episode Tiny, Mike and myself recorded together in person, we also had our friend Rob on the show! Rob is young father, so we picked his brain on his perspective of the Pixar movies and how they are affecting his daughter’s early childhood. I hope you guys like it!

Lone Survivor Review – Berg Misses the Mark, Luttrell Casts Doubt

Doubting Berg

Lone_Survivor_Poster

Lone Survivor tells the true account of Operation Red Wings, a failed SEAL Team 10 mission that sent four SEALS into Afghanistan to capture or kill a Taliban leader in June 2005. The movie is based on the book of the same name, which was written by the mission’s only survivor, Marcus Luttrell.

I went into this movie with high hopes that maybe Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom) would bounce back from Battleship with a thrilling and heartfelt military action movie. I expected a story of personal growth in the face of harrowing circumstances. What I got was a somewhat lopsided, jingoistic experience of questionable authenticity.

Listen to us discuss our favorite and least favorite movies from 2013 on The Obsessive Viewer Podcast

We survived the 2012 end of days! It’s really a miracle that we got to see any movies in 2013, right? Let alone 20 movies ABOUT THE APOCALYPSE!

In keeping with the great tradition (check out Matt and Tiny’s posts earlier today), here are my top ten movies of the year. They aren’t necessarily the BEST movies of the year, and that’s intentional. Best of the year list tend to be similar, and have very few surprises. So while you’ll find a few movies on this list that aren’t surprising at all, I like to think that my list has a combination of consensus with the critics and going against the grain. They might not be the best, but these are my Top Ten Favorite Movies of 2013.

Tiny’s 2013 Year in Movies

12 years

Listen to us discuss our favorite and least favorite movies from 2013 on The Obsessive Viewer Podcast

I watched a few movies in 2013. 320 to be exact! Yeah! I’m happy with that. (Matt is a dick for beating me by 5!). It was a really good movie-watching year for me. This blog and podcast that Matt, Mike and I do is about movies and TV, but for me, the greater of the two is movies. A lot of the TV I watch is escapism. It’s fun to dive into shows and get lost in their worlds. TV is sort of an outlet for me. However, watching a movie is more like a calling. I feel at peace. Not to say I never escape into a movie, but I treat it more like a relationship.

So I’m almost always more excited about the film side of our little endeavor here. Ironically some of my favorite episodes of ours are the TV ones, but I feel like I have a better knack for analyzing, critiquing and enjoying films. So I inevitably lean towards that side of our podcast and blog, and I’m excited to break down my 2013 Year in Movies publicly. Continue reading

Listen to us discuss our favorite and least favorite movies from 2013 on The Obsessive Viewer Podcast

I’ve been keeping track of the movies I watch every year since 2007. This year is the first year that I have a place online to share my stats and I’m excited about that because it was my best year yet. Below I have compiled some of my statistics and “end of the year” standouts and rankings.

I’ll list my top ten movies of 2013 in this post as well. If you want to hear me discuss my favorites, tomorrow The Obsessive Viewer Podcast is back with a 2013 wrap-up episode where me, Mike and Tiny all discuss the best and worst movies we watched last year.

As an added bonus, you can hear me discuss my top ten of 2013 on the latest episode of The Nerds You’re Looking For podcast!

The Month in Movies: December 2013

THE WAY, WAY BACK

I closed out 2013 with a December that consisted of 20 viewings. Of those 20 viewings, only 8 were “first viewings” and 3 were trips to the theater. It was a pretty mellow way to close out the year. It was actually the opposite of 2012’s stats, where I watched any and every thing that I could.

Stay tuned to the blog and podcast for a rundown of not only my year in movies but also Mike and Tiny’s year. For now, here’s my rundown of the highs and lows of December 2013. Continue reading

“Admission” Review – Genre Confusion and Empty Ethics Plague Tina Fey Movie

Apparently, nepotism is just fine so long as Tina Fey perpetuates it to the detriment of an institution that would give filming permission to a movie in which it’s basically the antagonist. Continue reading
