  1. I love you guys, but I’m thinking about starting my own podcast about the things I yell at you as I’m driving to work on Friday listening to your podcast lol

History is your shortfall. This episode, the only thing I remember yelling at you about was fan fiction. One of you said it “started” or maybe it was just “got big” recently. Just because you didn’t know about it doesn’t mean it wasn’t going on long before you were born.

I guarantee you that after the first cave painting was finished in prehistoric times, some kid picked up a rock and started painting the story of a plucky little teenager named Mary Sue who was stronger, smarter, and faster than all the hunters in the painting. She was so fantastic and beautiful all the cavemen wanted to drag her back to their caves and worship her. She passed around her rock to other teenagers and fan fiction was born.

Before the internet, there were people who would write fan fiction then pass it around to their friends on paper. Some people even would get a group of stories together and publish them in a chapbook. The internet made it more mainstream, but geek culture has been geek culture since the beginning of time.

Problem is I’d have to find a way to record myself in my car. I always do my best yelling in the car.

Just started listening to this week’s podcast and man did I yell. a lot. HISTORY! Learn it. Know it. Live it. Keep up the good work!

    • Haha. Fair enough. I’m glad to hear our podcast gets such a response from you!

I actually meant to circle back and clarify what Tiny said about fan fiction in that episode. The point he meant to make was that it was before fan fiction became more of an industry. Before Fifty Shades of Grey turned a Twilight fanfic into a wildly successful book series/movie and made “fanfic” a more mainstream buzzword.

We didn’t mean to offend people who’ve written or enjoyed fan fiction over many many years. It was just a case of poor word choice.

Thanks for listening and thanks for the awesome feedback!

      • Oh I wasn’t offended. I’m just a history nerd. I’ve also read more Captain America comics than anyone of my gender and age should be privy to so I could totally spoil the end of Civil War for you and tell you why Sharon Carter/Agent 13 (Peggy’s niece) is soooo fricken important! I’m not finished listening to this week yet though so I’ll see if there’s anything less spoilery to comment on. It’s either yell at my radio or yell at the idiots driving from Plainfield to 465 on 70 every day. You’re providing a community service without even knowing it. Not mad, just vocal 🙂

      • Well that’s definitely good to hear!

We recorded this week’s episode on Tuesday and in it I reference Agent 13 and how she hasn’t been developed or appeared anywhere. So yesterday when the casting was announced, I kind of smacked myself on the forehead.

I’m really excited for Civil War and I’ll hopefully have it read before the movie, so when we cover it next year I’ll have some good context for it.

I’m no stranger to idiots on my commute. I take 70 home from work everyday and get pretty easily agitated. Driving into downtown in the mornings is pretty aggravating too. I’m banking on the podcast making me a millionaire at some point so I can stay at home during rush hour.

And again, we love feedback of any kind so definitely keep it coming!

      • I drive home on 70 too so it’s your own life you’re saving lol I work near downtown and live in the back of beyond. I’m going to have to extend my 70 driving because now my root takes me past the track. As May goes on, I won’t be able to escape taking it all the way to Harding.

      • Oof, I’ve in Speedway and (and now barely outside of Speedway) for almost 20 years and traffic during May can be a huge pain.

      • I’m looking for a place closer. I’m weighing my Speedway options. It would be convenient, but dayum are those cars loud! They were doing Formula One practice (qualifying?) this morning. I work 3 miles away and it was still loud walking from my car.

Fifty Shades and Twilight are going to be the downfall of civilization as we know it. Do they not teach English in high schools anymore?

      • Lol. They really are. I like Speedway itself a lot. The things they’re doing on Main Street is so great. But yeah, traffic and noise from the track is pretty crazy. My brother just moved half a block from the track. I’m really curious how he’ll feel about the noise.

It’s really sad that there’s even a market for such poorly written crap. I wouldn’t mind it if it was written reasonably well. Maybe it’s due to how plugged into the Internet everyone is. I’m not sure. It’s troublesome though.

      • 50 Shades is 100 times worse than Twilight. Stephanie Meyer can’t build a character to save her life, but she builds her vampire world in her poorly written prose.

The idiot who wrote 50 Shades writes even more poorly than Meyer and then doesn’t even bother with details. She portrays BDSM as abusive and rapey. I think she said in an interview her entire research process was watching a single video. It probably wasn’t even a good one. I’ve known a lot of people who live that lifestyle and they were all extremely offended and disgusted by what was in that book. They’re also not happy about the way the book glorifies abusers and might make victims less likely to come forward and get help because they see that and think it’s supposed to be that way.

I told you not to get me started lol Happy you did though.

      • That’s definitely the most appalling thing about Fifty Shades for me. I thought Twilight glorified unhealthy/abusive relationships but Fifty Shades is so much worse. Both of them are really dangerous things when in the hands of someone impressionable. It’s really disgusting.

Even if I’m curious about how awful Fifty Shades is, I’m completely unwilling to pay money to see it.

      • I used to write book reviews for a romance website. You want good erotica to read, I can suggest some. I wouldn’t use the money of someone I didn’t like to see that movie let alone use my own. Totally agree.

  2. Oh and don’t get me started on the crapfest that is Twilight/50 Shades. You can only expect horrid fan fic from such a poorly written series of books, but that chick hit crappy out of the park. She wrote the thing on her PHONE! Who publishes un-edited crap-fic written on a Blackberry of all things? Ugh

    • Hahaha I got a bizarre level of enjoyment out of watching the first few Twilight movies just to rip on them. You could pay me to read them or Fifty Shades though. Definitely not for me.

Whenever I see excerpts of Fifty Shades around the Internet I get really depressed about it being such a hit.
