Welcome to the latest installment of what will be a lengthy ongoing series of reviews on ObsessiveViewer.com.

Throughout my life, one of the largest gaps in my love of television (and frequent flirtation with science fiction) has been Star Trek. Now, by the grace of Netflix, I’m rectifying that injustice. My plan is to watch everything Star Trek related by the 50th anniversary on September 8th, 2016.

718 television episodes, 13 movies, a projected 45 reviews, and 1 Obsessive Viewer. Let’s get started. Continue reading

Welcome to the first of what will be a lengthy ongoing series of reviews on ObsessiveViewer.com.

Throughout my life, one of the largest gaps in my love of television (and frequent flirtation with science fiction) has been Star Trek. Now, by the grace of Netflix, I’m rectifying that injustice. My plan is to watch as much Star Trek related content as I can by the 50th anniversary on September 8th, 2016.

Something that bothers me to no end is hearing people ask for a list of episodes of a TV show to “get the gist” of what’s going on instead of getting caught up. Likewise, it bugs me when people skip episodes and just read plot summaries. I know I’m probably weird and this is a very specific pet peeve, but I hold the long-form narrative structure of television in high regard and feel like it should be consumed in chronological order and with no gaps. The latest episode of Scream actually managed to surprise me. Episode 2 left such a poor taste in my mouth that I put off watching “Wanna Play a Game?” for several days. Hence, why I’m once again late with my review.

Daredevil is the first of four Netflix-exclusive Marvel series that will lead to The Defenders miniseries (which will also be Netflix-exclusive). It’s a tonal anomaly within the MCU since its Netflix exclusivity gives the studio more leeway in terms of subject matter. And, in that aspect, Marvel certainly did not hold back. Continue reading

TV Review: Scream – 101 – “Pilot”

“You root for them. You love them. So when they are brutally murdered…it hurts.” – Noah

Find all my reviews of MTV’s Scream here.

Oh boy. If you’d told me 19 years ago that I would one day be watching a Scream television series on MTV, I don’t know if I would believe you. Yet, here we are. Scream is a horror franchise that is near and dear to my heart. I watched it when I was way too young (holy crap, the first movie is 19 years old) and fell in love with the self-awareness. More importantly, I was enamored by the characters’ seemingly endless knowledge of the horror genre and movies in genre. I was around 10 years old, I was impressionable, and damn it, I wanted to love movies the way the characters in Scream did.

So when I found out about MTV’s series, I was naturally hesitant. When I sat down to watch the pilot episode, I went in with as much of an open mind as I could. However, as open as my mind was, MTV’s iteration of the self-referential horror property that I grew up loving and patterning my movie viewing after still fell short for me. Continue reading

Netflix Review: Bloodline – Season 1

bloodline

In Netflix’s latest original series Bloodline, the Rayburns are a well-respected affluent family in the Florida Keys thanks to the inn and charter business started by patriarch Robert (Sam Shepard) and matriarch Sally (Sissy Spacek). But when the family’s black sheep son Danny (Ben Mendelsohn) comes home for a ceremony honoring his father, his return threatens to destroy the peaceful balance his siblings and parents have worked toward. Yahoo Screen: Community – 601 – “Ladders” Review

community-yahoo-screen

When Yahoo picked up Community, it seemed fitting that this weird little show would land in the most unlikely and random place. I hadn’t heard of Yahoo’s free video service, but I thought it was a smart marketing decision to pick up Community and boost Yahoo Screen’s numbers with one of sitcom television’s most outspoken and loyal fan bases.

Now the show’s 6th season (a milestone I honestly never thought the show would reach) is here. The first two episodes premiered today with new episodes made available each Tuesday. All of which are available on a free app from a site that gave me my first email address almost two decades ago. Continue reading
