Here’s the latest episode of The Obsessive Viewer Podcast. We decided to do an extended potpourri episode since we haven’t done a proper potpourri in what seems like a while. We recorded for 2 hours but I got it edited down to an hour and a half. Don’t worry, though, I’ve saved all the stuff for a later podcast so you’ll hear it eventually. And it’s good, too!

This week we’re releasing a very special episode of The Obsessive Viewer Podcast! Not only is this the first episode Tiny, Mike and myself recorded together in person, we also had our friend Rob on the show! Rob is young father, so we picked his brain on his perspective of the Pixar movies and how they are affecting his daughter’s early childhood. I hope you guys like it!

Here’s the latest ep of The Obsessive Viewer Podcast! I’m really excited about this episode. This week we had an in-studio guest for the first time since our friend Greg helped us kick off the podcast in June! Our guest was Chase Kahlo, one of the guys behind Indy PopCon (the brand new pop culture convention coming to Indianapolis in May 2014).

We had so much fun recording with Chase and we’ll probably have him back as the convention nears. And when I say he’s our first “in-studio” guest, I mean he’s our first guest in the makeshift studio I converted my brother’s sunroom into and use to record in while he’s at work. But all the same, it’s a great episode and I hope you like it. Continue reading

4 Days of Blood: Part I – OV’s Found Footage Fest

paranormal-activity-movie-katie-featherstone-micah-sloat

We are nearing the end of Shocktober 2013. In the run up to the final week, I realized I have a ton of movies I still want to watch. So, with plenty of unused vacation time to spare, I took Monday and Tuesday off from work. Throughout this mini-vacation I’ve created for myself, I’m going to be watching a ton of Shocktober movies. I’ve set myself a goal of writing up one blog post for each day, similar to Tiny’s Shocktober Musings posts.

Here we have Part I, my “found footage fest.” Found footage movies get a bad rap. Sure, there’s plenty of dreck in the subgenre and it inspires needless sequels that are churned out faster than they can be written. But when the format is handled right, it can be an absolutely terrifying experience that gets under your skin.

Let me know what you think about the found footage genre in the comments below and follow me around the internet with the links below.

The Obsessive Viewer’s Favorite Pilot Episodes

Pilots are interesting beasts in the television world. They’re used to convince a studio to shell out more money for more episodes. In order to do that, a pilot needs to succeed on several more fronts of storytelling than any other single episode. A pilot needs to introduce the major characters of a series in an engaging, often standalone, story that will leave the audience clamoring for more.

Furthermore, a good pilot needs to rely on a strong cast to build a rapport in a short period of time. Writers working on pilots also have to gauge possible long-term onscreen relationships completely blind of actors’ chemistry. Because of these factors, I live by one steadfast television-viewing rule:

Never judge a show by its pilot.

But some series have such strong pilot episodes that you can and should judge them on the pilots. And so, here I have compiled a list of some of my favorite pilot episodes. They aren’t necessarily my favorite shows ever, and they aren’t exactly the best episodes of said shows. These episodes are just the most engaging series-starters that I’ve seen. They also introduce the characters and story arcs in a highly satisfying way.

You can click the episode titles in the list to buy them digitally on Amazon.

So enjoy and be sure to let me know what you think of my choices in the comment section. Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter @ObsessiveViewer and like the blog on Facebook.
