EDITOR’S NOTE:

Tiny had a really impressive movie watching year in 2014 and to commemorate it, he wrote a massive blog post about it. Here it is in all its glory. Of course, be sure to follow Tiny on Twitter @ObsessiveTiny and check out his side project podcast: The Secular Perspective.

Tiny’s 2013 Year in Movies

12 years

Listen to us discuss our favorite and least favorite movies from 2013 on The Obsessive Viewer Podcast

I watched a few movies in 2013. 320 to be exact! Yeah! I’m happy with that. (Matt is a dick for beating me by 5!). It was a really good movie-watching year for me. This blog and podcast that Matt, Mike and I do is about movies and TV, but for me, the greater of the two is movies. A lot of the TV I watch is escapism. It’s fun to dive into shows and get lost in their worlds. TV is sort of an outlet for me. However, watching a movie is more like a calling. I feel at peace. Not to say I never escape into a movie, but I treat it more like a relationship.

So I’m almost always more excited about the film side of our little endeavor here. Ironically some of my favorite episodes of ours are the TV ones, but I feel like I have a better knack for analyzing, critiquing and enjoying films. So I inevitably lean towards that side of our podcast and blog, and I’m excited to break down my 2013 Year in Movies publicly. Continue reading

The Month in Movies: Shocktober 2013

shocktober

My friends and I have been dedicating the month of October to the horror genre and calling it Shocktober for several years now.  I started this blog in February and from the start I was excited about sharing my Shocktober experience with anyone and everyone.

I have been saying for a while that this year has to make up for last year’s abysmal performance. I had it in my mind that I barely watched anything last year. As it turns out, I was 27 movies last year. Not all of them were Shocktober movies, but I had been working under the assumption that I had maybe 10 or 11 viewings total last year.

It’s all for the best because this year was the second best Shocktober I’ve ever had. While I didn’t beat my record of 57 viewings in 2011, I did come close with a very respectable 52 viewings. I’m also proud to say that only 3 of those viewings weren’t Shocktober movies. Continue reading

Tiny’s Shocktober Musings – Part I [Obsessive Friends: Tiny]

OBSESSIVE NOTE: In honor of Shocktober here on the blog, I asked my friends and podcast co-hosts to write about their experiences with this sacred tradition. Tiny’s approach was to collect his  thoughts on the movies he watches this month and release them in groups. Here is the first installment of Tiny’s Shocktober Musings.

On Her Majesty’s Dumpster Service: How “The East” Broke the Mold [Obsessive Friends: Tiny]

There’s something surprisingly endearing about watching the beautiful Brit Marling take a bite out of a half-eaten apple she just pulled out of the trash. I found myself pondering these strange occurrences throughout The East. I’m guessing most of the audience felt the same way, and I’m also guessing the filmmakers are happy about that. I’m not sure I’ve ever really seen a movie like The East; which I mean in the most complimentary of ways.  Continue reading

We’re Movie Fans, Damn It! Three ‘Into Darkness’ Reviews by Non-Trekkies [Obsessive Friends: Mike & Tiny]

Untitled

My friends Mike and Tiny saw Star Trek Into Darkness last weekend and couldn’t stop raving about it. Mike is a tough critic, especially when it comes to big tent-pole movies. Tiny and I usually see eye to eye on most movies. So after hearing their praise, I had to see the movie for myself.  Before I bought my ticket, an idea struck me. I decided my friends and I should write individual reviews of the movie for this blog. So that’s what we did.

As far as expectations were concerned, the three of us really liked J.J. Abrams’ reboot/sequel hybrid. So we each went “into Darkness” somewhere between “excited” and “extremely excited.” Below you will find all three of our takes on the movie, the fan reactions and Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance. Enjoy and, as always, don’t forget to follow me on Twitter and like the blog on Facebook. Continue reading
