This week’s Streaming Saturday is a really good one. Following is Christopher Nolan’s first movie and currently one of only two films he’s made that is a completely original story. Fun fact, by the way, along with Insomnia, it is one of two Nolan movies I haven’t seen in a theater.
Filmed in black and white with a budget of about $6,000, Following is about a man who has a bizarre obsession with following people. Soon he falls in with a burglar and the pair enter into an intricate caper plot full of deception.
With a 69 minute runtime, Following is a quick introduction to what would become some of Nolan’s signature filmmaking techniques. Double crosses, nonlinear storytelling, plot twists and sharp dialogue are all prevalent here. It’s well worth your time and, if you’re a Criterion collector, money.

Good review Matt. It definitely goes to show you what you can do with a small budget, and a huge imagination. Now look at Nolan. The guy’s the film maker to beat out there!
