Last weekend I had one of the most uniquely satisfying theater-going experiences of my life. The Historic Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, Indiana was hosting a two-day film fest featuring seven science fiction horror films. With two films screening Friday night and the other five screening Saturday, it was the perfect opportunity for me to become acquainted with the theater.

- Voyagers, 2021 - ★★ April 20, 2021It felt really good to be back in a movie theater. This movie was nothing special, however. Lord of the Flies in space that's only kind of good when it leans into its Lord of the Flies source material (or rip off, whatever).Solid visual effects but pretty bland story.
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2014 - ★★★★½ April 18, 2021Watched on Saturday April 17, 2021.
- Godzilla vs. Kong, 2021 - ★★★ April 7, 2021The visual effects and destruction/battle sequences were really fantastic and looked incredible. Suffers from too many under developed human subplots and eye rolling logic I couldn't quite suspend my disbelief for. Still quite a bit of fun.Podcast review on The Obsessive Viewer will come out probably tomorrow.
- Godzilla: King of the Monsters, 2019 - ★★★ April 6, 2021First time seeing it since the theater and I'm surprised to find I liked it quite a bit more than I remember. Solid monster movie.
- In the Tall Grass, 2019 - ★★½ April 5, 2021Rewatched to record a commentary track for my Patreon.I was pretty forgiving of this movie the first time I saw it. While I still respect some of the visuals and jumps into surreal visions, as an overall movie, it just didn't really hold up that well.I love the concept (and dig the novella as well), but the movie takes this confused "lost in supern […]
- Kong: Skull Island, 2017 - ★★★½ April 5, 2021Really liked the time period, the location, and just the overall scale of Kong. All of that was really eye popping. Pretty solid all around.
- Voyagers, 2021 - ★★ April 20, 2021
Apes Franchise Review: Part I – Planet of the Apes (1968)
Next week, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be released. Much like what I did with X-Men: Days of Future Past, I decided I would prepare for Dawn by reviewing every movie in the Apes franchise thus far. Unlike X-Men, however, Planet of the Apes is a franchise I’ve never seen before. At all. So I think it’ll be interesting to see how my feelings toward these movies and this franchise evolves throughout my viewing.
You can find an index of my Apes reviews here and check out The Obsessive Viewer Podcast here. Now, without further adieu, here’s my review of 1968’s Planet of the Apes.
