Mike Remembers: Harold Ramis

_1393342999

This one stings.

I texted a friend Tuesday about the death of comedy legend Harold Ramis, his response struck a chord: “One day all the greats will be gone, bums me out,” he said, and I couldn’t agree more. Harold Ramis really was one of the greats. Personally, I revered Ramis. So much of his work has spots on my favorites lists. Vacation, directed by Ramis, is a top five movie for me. Caddyshack, also directed by Ramis, is a comedy classic, and Ghostbusters, in which Ramis starred as Egon Spangler, was a huge part of my childhood.

Mike’s Trailer Spotlight: Guardians of the Galaxy

Screen-Shot-2014-02-19-at-09.08.57

Release Date: August 1, 2014

Director: James Gunn

Written By: James Gunn (screenplay), Nicole Perlman, James Gunn, (story), Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (comic book)

I love the new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, and according to Yahoo’s The Wrap, so does the rest of the internet:

“After debuting Tuesday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” the footage for the upcoming outer space adventure attracted 88,000 mentions across Twitter, Facebook and various blogs in a 12-hour period between 11 p.m. EST until 11 a.m. EST.  By way of contrast, in the first 24 hours following their trailer debuts, “Man of Steel” attracted 75,000 social mentions, and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ inspired 96,000 mentions — and those were released at a reasonable hour.” Continue reading

Mike’s Top 10 Movies of 2013 and Viewing Stats for the Year

star-trek-into-darkness-8101-p-1366904611-470-75

Listen to us discuss our favorite and least favorite movies from 2013 on The Obsessive Viewer Podcast

We survived the 2012 end of days! It’s really a miracle that we got to see any movies in 2013, right? Let alone 20 movies ABOUT THE APOCALYPSE!

In keeping with the great tradition (check out Matt and Tiny’s posts earlier today), here are my top ten movies of the year. They aren’t necessarily the BEST movies of the year, and that’s intentional. Best of the year list tend to be similar, and have very few surprises. So while you’ll find a few movies on this list that aren’t surprising at all, I like to think that my list has a combination of consensus with the critics and going against the grain. They might not be the best, but these are my Top Ten Favorite Movies of 2013.

Mike’s Trailer Tuesday: Community – Season 5 (2014)

Season_Five_promo_pic

Air Date: Thursday, January 2, 2014

Yesterday NBC released a trailer for Season 5 of Community

It’s no secret that Community has had its fair share of struggles and controversy in the past. It’s never had impressive ratings (or average ratings for that matter,) there have been issues with cast members (notably Chevy Chase,) it lost its showrunner and creator at the end of the third season, and all of these issues culminated in a disappointing season 4. In fact, disappointing doesn’t really describe it well enough. So one can’t really be blamed for looking forward to Season five of Community with more than a bit of apprehension. Continue reading

Mike’s Trailer Tuesday: X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

xmen229013201326

Release Date: May 23, 2014

Director: Bryan Singer

Written By: Simon Kinberg (screenplay and story), Matthew Vaughn (story) & Jane Goldman (story)

This summer the two studios which own rights to Marvel characters and aren’t named Marvel will duke it out at the box office. Sony will release the hotly anticipated (and lately scrutinized) Amazing Spider-Man 2. Without a major Marvel studios release, the only competition for Amazing 2 will be Bryan Singer’s return to the helm of the X-Men franchise in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Early excitement would indicate DoFP is the more likely to win the superhero box office battle this summer.

Note: Come back Thursday for a special Thursday edition of Trailer Tuesday for the release of the Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer. Continue reading

Dexter_Season_8_promotional_poster.jpeg

“The mask is slipping,” a line from a second season episode of Showtime’s long running mega-hit  Dexter, is forever tattooed on the side of my foot – a constant reminder of one of my favorite episodes in one of my favorite seasons of one of my favorite shows of all time, and now a reminder of how far the show has fallen. I got the tattoo (during Dexter’s fourth season) as, both an homage to a fantastic show, and a way to say that good things happen when we reveal to people who we really are; for better or worse. I also really liked Michael C. Hall’s reading of the line. But man, maybe Dexter should have left the mask on a little longer…

Dexter, now in the smack-dab middle of its final season, is truly limping toward the finish line. It’s ratings are still tops over at Showtime, but more people watching the show doesn’t mean that old fans are liking what they see, and the show is severely showing its age. Continue reading

A Farewell to Roger Ebert by Mike White

Today the entertainment world mourns the loss of its most prolific and beloved critic. Roger Ebert died yesterday after a lengthy battle with cancer. Knowing I couldn’t do the man proper justice, I asked my friend (and fellow blogger at Geek is the New Pop) Mike White to share a few words on Ebert’s passing. Below is what he had to say… Continue reading
