How I Met Your Spinoff – Why I’m Looking Forward to HIMYD

tumblr_static_hiii

CBS recently gave a pilot order for a HIMYM spinoff titled How I Met Your Dad. Being a huge fan of HIMYM and being generally against the idea of spinoffs, I was surprised how much I like the idea of this spinoff. Watch me defend myself below. Follow me around the Internet.

The Week in TV: Sept. 22nd-28th, 2013

week in tv 922

Here’s this week’s installment of everyone’s favorite feature: “The Obsessive Viewer’s Week in TV!” This week was a big one. As far as new episodes, we had the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad, a plot building episode of Boardwalk Empire, plus the premieres of How I Met Your Mother, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Mindy Project.

In the Rewatches, Catch Ups and Independent Viewings category, I finally finished up season 2 of The Newsroom, made some great progress on the recently added to Netflix 2nd season of New Girl and an intensely timed rewatch of How I Met Your Mother’s 8th season.

I also decided against watching the Emmys and let my ridiculous new habit of weekly HBO blu-ray purchases get the better of me. Read on and let me know what you think. Continue reading

OV’s Favorite How I Met Your Mother Episodes

 wpid-how-i-met-your-mother.jpg

Tonight my pick for television’s most consistently funny sitcom begins its final season. The 9th season of CBS’s How I Met Your Mother will see vast changes to the storytelling structure of the show. The entire season will take place over one weekend with various jumps forwards and backwards in time. Adding to the changes, we now have the Mother cast and ready to win the hearts of the HIMYM fan base and Ted.

It’s going to be sad to see HIMYM take its final bow, but it’s also a time to celebrate. In honor of tonight’s premiere, I have compiled a list of my favorite HIMYM episodes. I was originally going to confine myself to a ten-episode list but after 8 seasons that is just impossible. Instead, I’ve chosen two episodes from each season to put into the pantheon of great sitcom episodes.

You can read my list below. It would have been far too difficult to rank these episodes, so for the sake of my sanity I’m presenting them in chronological order.

Let me know what episodes you would include and why in the comments below or on Twitter @ObsessiveViewer. You can also like the blog on Facebook and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes. Continue reading

TV Review: Under the Dome – 113 – “Curtains”

UNDER-THE-DOME

You can probably tell from the way I’ve been posting these Under the Dome reviews on Thursdays that I’ve been getting slightly burnt out on reviewing every episode. On that score, I’m a bit relieved to be churning out my final season 1 review for the CBS Summer series. This finale gave me some mixed emotions. You can read my thoughts below but be warned SPOILERS WITHIN

The Week in TV: Sept. 8th–14th, 2013

static-tv.jpg

This is the time of year when I get bogged down with all the series I follow. Some shows fall by the wayside while others get picked up if word of mouth or marketing is strong enough.  Obviously I can’t devote a post every week (like with Bates Motel or Under the Dome) to every show I watch. So here’s a new weekly series I’m going to try my best to work on as the fall TV season unfolds.

I’m already off to a semi-bad start considering this was meant to go up Sunday. But I’ll try my best in the future to post these when I intend them to be posted.

TV Review: Under the Dome – 112 – “Exigent Circumstances”

UNDER-THE-DOME

In this week’s penultimate episode of Under the Dome’s first season, Big Jim took full control of Chester’s Mill and exploited their fear of the Barbie he led them to believe was a threat. Elsewhere, Julia took a nap, Junior became somewhat tolerable and Joe and Norrie hid the mini Dome.

TV Review: Under the Dome – 111 – “Speak of the Devil”

UNDER-THE-DOME

It’s time again for everyone’s favorite game, “Is Under the Dome good this week?” The rules are simple. The folks at CBS air an episode on Monday night. I watch said episode either late Monday or early Tuesday. Then I procrastinate. On Wednesday (sometimes Thursday, ahem) I post my thoughts.

So. Was Under the Dome good this week? Place your bets and read on.

TV Review: Under the Dome – 110 – “Let the Games Begin”

UNDER-THE-DOME

I’ve waited a couple days before writing and posting this review. I’ve been busy editing and prepping 2 episodes of the podcast for release this week. Shameless plug, if you’re a fan of Breaking Bad, you should check out our first of 3 special Breaking Bad episodes where we breakdown the show’s final run episode by episode.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to Under the Dome, shall we?

TV Review: Under the Dome – 109 – “The Fourth Hand”

UNDER-THE-DOME

twitterpost tagspost tagsreddit

Under the Dome has become a successful mystery series in that each week I don’t know whether I will write a favorable review or pick the whole thing apart while comparing it to another show.  It’s been a very inconsistent show in its first eight episodes. Being an eternal optimist, I view this inconsistency as a good thing. If the writers listen to feedback and examine what works and what doesn’t, the series could really thrive in season two.

For now, however, let’s talk about episode 9: “The Fourth Hand.”

Well, summer is winding to a close and television fans are starting to look toward the fall TV season. TV Review: Under the Dome – 108 – “Thicker Than Water”

UNDER-THE-DOME

I feel like I was a little hard on the show last week. I want to reiterate that it was a good episode but the similarities to Lost were obvious to the point of being distracting for me.

I also want to say that Under the Dome season 1 now has a home video release date. It’ll be released on November 5th on DVD, Blu-Ray and a collector’s edition Blu-Ray set. You can preorder it by clicking the corresponding links in the previous sentence. I think it’s interesting that it’s releasing so soon. It’s an interesting way to combat piracy.

But enough about that; here’s my review of the episode. As always,  BEWARE, MAJOR SPOILERS Continue reading

TV Review: Under the Dome – 107 – “Imperfect Circles”

UNDER-THE-DOME

Last week’s Under the Dome was the closest the series has come to being what I hoped it would be before the series premiered. I went into this week’s episode hopeful that it would keep the momentum going. So did it? Read on to find out but beware. There are MAJOR EPISODE SPOILERS in this review. Continue reading

A note before I get started with this week’s review. I mentioned last week in my “Parting Thoughts” section that I didn’t understand last week’s episode title (Blue on Blue) and thought a better episode title would be “Friendly Fire.” Thanks to Reddit user “AegisToTheCrown” I now know that “Blue on Blue” is actually military terminology for “friendly fire.” I don’t know why I didn’t know that, but all the same, thanks Aegis!

TV Review: Under the Dome – 105 – “Blue on Blue”

Under the Dome is getting dangerous. This was the second week in a row that the show has had a strong episode. It’s successfully lulling me into a false sense of security as to what kind of quality we can expect from the rest of the season.
