The Month in Movies: May 2013

May was a disappointment for me in terms of the amount of movies I watched. It was the first month of 2013 that wasn’t a “record breaker.” My 20 viewings last month barely beat my 19 viewings in May 2012. But the month fell short of 2011’s 22 viewings. I didn’t even get a chance to watch a director’s work […]

Streaming Saturday: House of Cards – Season 1

I’m excited about this week’s Streaming Saturday. The reason I started this blog was because of my fascination with Netflix’s dive into original programming. One of my first posts was about how Netflix could be a game changer for the television industry. I stand by that assessment. And now that I’ve watched Netflix’s flagship series House of Cards, I can officially […]

Trailer Tuesday: Ender’s Game (2013)

Taking a break from House of Cards (that show is incredible, by the way) to deliver a regrettably late Trailer Tuesday. Just released today is the first trailer for the highly anticipated Ender’s Game. I’ve never read the books but I have friends who have and swear by it. The trailer is replete with special effects and the movie is rounded out by a very impressive cast. 2013 is truly becoming the “year of Sci-Fi” and I love it. Ender’s game is set for a November release. I am going to read the books before I see it. I can’t wait. View the trailer below…

Streaming Saturday: The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

This week’s Streaming Saturday is The Cabin in the Woods. Produced by nerd-god Joss Whedon and directed by Drew Goddard (the pair wrote the script), the movie is a fresh take on a tired horror trope. To reveal any details would be a detriment to anyone’s first viewing. Suffice it to say, the movie takes a violently witty, meta approach to […]

The Month in Movies: April 2013

After consulting my movies watched lists from previous years, I’m happy to announce April 2013 was my best April since I start tracking my viewing habits in 2007. That makes it the 4th consecutive “best month” this year. This time of year I usually get bogged down with TV shows wrapping up and, occasionally, nice weather. Despite that, this year […]

Trailer Tuesday: Pacific Rim (2013)

Pacific Rim (2013) Release Date: July 12th, 2013 Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman in a Guillermo del Toro movie about humans fighting aliens with giant machines? I’m definitely going to be seeing this one in the theater! I know nothing about this movie. In fact, this is the first trailer I’ve actually watched for it. I have been aware of the […]

Streaming Saturday: The Faculty (1998)

Streaming Saturday comes a little late this week. This week’s recommendation is 1998’s “teenvasion of the body snatchers” (I can’t believe I just said that, either) movie The Faculty. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Kevin Williamson, the movie is a slightly dated, very silly, hour and a half that, despite its best efforts, doesn’t leave you feeling like you’ve […]

Streaming Saturday: Side by Side (2012)

I just finished watching the amazing documentary Side by Side on Netflix and deem it very worthy of a Streaming Saturday recommendation. Keanu Reeves interviews many heavy hitters of the industry to get their take on the celluloid vs. digital filmmaking debate. It’s a really fascinating look at the evolving artform of filmmaking. There are a lot of things I […]
